Dr Cranky works with local schools and their communities to ensure every kid has access to working bike that they can ride regularly. Our focus is running a program that lets us provide bikes, helmets and locks to those who would not otherwise be able to afford or access them. 
Dr Cranky believes the program must be fun, frank and functional for kids and those involved. And must​ give kids freedom.
This means NO:
  • Patronising - talk to kids honestly and frankly. Let them take risks and learn from mistakes.
  • Snobs - if you hate rust, grease or anything below Shimano 105 it's not for you. It's about riding and fun, not sport or performance.
  • ​Free Rides - its not about giving out bikes or free stuff , its about fostering independence and community strength.  Yes, the bikes, helmets and locks are free but you have to get engaged to access them i.e. turn up to school and help us out if needed.
  • Chasing victims or ostracising those in need - everyone is welcome and no questions are asked about your social or economic status.

Dr Cranky is a fun loving but frank character who wants to get kids on bikes. It's also a group of parent volunteers and schools helping to get more kids riding, recycling bikes and strengthening communities. 
Dr Cranky's Ltd is a registered Charity (ABN 90 625 184 527) which provides bikes to disadvantaged children and families (see the constitution). Recycling and repairing bikes at schools lets us do this in a targeted way without ostracizing those in need. All funds raised go towards providing bikes, parts, helmets and locks to those in need as well as tools and training for volunteers.

​It all started in 2014 with Bart Sbeghen and Peter Hormann at Flemington Primary School. After the unexpected success of the "Bicycle Hospital" at the school, Bart (L, Peter R) left his job as a bicycle advocate at Bicycle Network in August 2016 to help establish Dr Cranky Bicycle Hospitals at other schools.
Dr Cranky's now supports parent led Bicycle Hospitals at four schools:
  • ​Clayton North PS - Every second Tues after school
  • Flemington PS - Fridays before and after school
  • St Kilda PS - Every Thursday before and after school​
  • ​Bellbridge PS - Every second Wed before school
  • And we deliver School Bike Checks and Community Bike Checks at over 100 other settings. Most of our impact is now delivered in this way in partnership with local councils and communities.
